The Chairman of Gwagwalada Area Council, Mohammed Kasim Ikwa, has pledged to strengthen local vigilante groups across rural communities to tackle kidnapping, banditry and other criminal activities in the area.
Ikwa made the pledge on Tuesday during the inauguration of the vice chairman and 10 newly elected councillors at the council secretariat in Gwagwalada.
He said security would be given top priority under his administration, describing it as one of the key pillars of his seven-point agenda.
According to him, the council will convene monthly security meetings involving security agencies, traditional rulers and community leaders to promote peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders and address emerging security challenges.
The chairman also expressed concern over what he described as the huge liabilities inherited from the immediate past administration but assured residents that the debt burden would not hinder his commitment to infrastructure development.
“It is unfortunate that, in the history of Gwagwalada Area Council, the outgoing administration left behind a huge debt. However, that will not stop us from providing viable infrastructure that will positively impact the lives of our people over the next four years,” he said.
Ikwa assured residents that his administration would remain focused on delivering projects and programmes aimed at improving their welfare despite the financial challenges facing the council.
