The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed reports alleging that a Deputy Commissioner of Police, Khan Salihu, was kidnapped before his death, describing the claim as false and misleading.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said the late officer was never abducted at any time before his death and urged the public to disregard the report.
The command said Salihu briefly complained of feeling unwell and was immediately taken to a hospital for medical attention. However, doctors confirmed him dead on arrival.
The police stressed that no criminal act was linked to the officer’s death and described reports suggesting otherwise as a fabrication.
“The report is entirely false, misleading and a complete fabrication with no basis in fact whatsoever,” the statement said.
The command also faulted the media organisation that published the claim, accusing it of failing to verify the information with relevant authorities before publication.
It said the report had caused unnecessary distress to the deceased’s family, friends and colleagues, who were mourning the loss of a dedicated officer.
The police called for the immediate withdrawal of the publication and urged the media outlet involved to issue a public correction and apology in the interest of professionalism and accountability.
The command warned against the spread of unverified reports capable of causing confusion and misinformation among the public.
