The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), has called on Nigerians, regardless of faith or ethnicity, to reject narratives that seek to sow division among the populace.
The Council, in a statement to mark the new Islamic New Year, 1448 AH, said the occasion offers an opportunity for individual and collective introspection, spiritual renewal, and recommitment to the values of righteousness, justice, compassion, and service to humanity.
The statement, signed by the council’s spokesperson, Abbas Jimoh, expressed sadness over the prevailing atmosphere of fear, anxiety, and hardship in the country.
It added that it recognises the biting economic realities facing the average Nigerian household as high living expenses, food inflation, and unemployment continue to test the patience and faith of the people.
“While the government implements necessary reforms, the NSCIA urges that these policies be accompanied by compassionate palliatives and economic inclusion strategies that reach the poorest of the poor and most vulnerable. In the face of these challenges, the council emphasises that Islam is a religion of peace and trust in God coupled with action,” it said.
Tinubu calls for patriotism
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu urged Muslims and all Nigerians to imbibe the spirit of patriotism.
The President, in a statement by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, said the lessons of Hijrah, which include sacrifice, renewal, patience, and faith in Allah’s divine plan, remain central to building a peaceful, just, and prosperous nation.
“The President admonishes all Nigerians, particularly the Muslim faithful, to embrace the spirit of the new year by rededicating themselves to the ideals of good citizenship.”
