Nine local government areas in Sokoto State are at risk of flooding during the 2026 rainy season, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has warned.
The agency said flooding is expected to peak between July and September, with the Rima River likely to overflow its banks and inundate farmlands, riverside communities and critical infrastructure across parts of the state.
NEMA Director-General, Mrs Zubaida Umar, disclosed this during the stakeholders’ engagement for the 2026 National Preparedness and Response Campaign on Flood Disaster and Related Hazards held in Sokoto. She was represented by Alhaji Tukur Abubakar.
She identified the vulnerable local government areas as Gada, Goronyo, Gudu, Kebbe, Kware, Sabon Birni, Silame, Sokoto North and Wamakko, noting that Sokoto is among the states classified as high flood-risk areas in the 2026 Annual Flood Outlook.
According to her, the impact of the flooding may extend beyond the peak rainy season, as elevated water levels are expected to persist into October and November, thereby prolonging flood-related challenges in affected communities.
Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Prof. Abubakar Junaidu, said flooding remained one of the most devastating natural disasters affecting communities across the state, resulting in loss of lives, destruction of houses, farmlands, roads and other socio-economic assets.
