Cardinal Camillo Ruini, the head of

the Italian Episcopal Conference from 1991 to 2007 and the Vicar

General of the Diocese of Rome from 1991 to 2008, died on

Tuesday at the age of 95.

A leading figure among conservative Catholics, Ruini was close

to John Paul II and a member of the College of Cardinals that

elected Benedict XVI.

Among other things he denied a Catholic funeral to artist and

right-to-die activist Piergiorgo Welby after his death in 2006

and waged a relentless battle over the case of Eluana Englaro, a

woman who was taken off life support in 2009 after being in a

vegetative state for 17 years following a long legal battle.

He was known to be on good terms with late ex-premier Silvio

Berlusconi and had recently given a "decidedly positive"

assessment of Premier Giorgia Meloni.
