A section of the historic Victoria Lines that recently collapsed at Wied il-Faħam has already been rebuilt, with heritage NGO Friends of the Victoria Lines praising what it described as a “record-time” restoration.
The organisation said the swift intervention by the Restoration and Preservation Department ensured the original stones remained in place, allowing the damaged section to be reconstructed using traditional restoration techniques.
Friends of the Victoria Lines also highlighted the challenges faced by workers, noting that the site is located at the bottom of Wied il-Faħam and has no vehicular access, preventing the use of heavy machinery.
The group praised the expertise of the department’s architects and craftsmen, whose work allowed the historic structure to be restored within days of the collapse being reported.
It also thanked Minister for Arts, Culture and National Heritage Malcolm Paul Agius Galea, saying the urgency of the intervention was quickly recognised and prioritised.
The restored section forms part of the 12-kilometre Victoria Lines trail, one of Malta’s most significant historic fortifications and a popular route for walkers and hikers.
