Italy has perhaps less than 1% of the
world's buffalo population but, thanks to new technologies,
precision dairy farming and the economic model created by DOP
(protected designation of origin) mozzarella cheese, it has once
again attracted the attention of scientists, farmers and
breeders worldwide.
The World Buffalo Congress is in fact returning to Italy after
nearly 20 years, from October 28th to October 30th, 2026.
It will be held in the Campania city of Sorrento.
The event, which has reached its 14th edition, will gather the
whole supply chain of buffalo mozzarella cheese.
"It is an important event because it is able to connect not just
researchers and professors but also breeders and producers, the
sector's stakeholders, thus scientific contribution is certainly
important, alongside the productive and economic parts",
explained Angela Salzano, president of the Scientific Committee
of the Congress.
"We are famous worldwide in the buffalo sector due to precision
livestock farming, so participants will be able to see milking
robots, automated calf feeders, new sensor and image
technologies", continued Salzano.
The event has been "strongly promoted" by the Department of
Veterinary Medicine and Animal Production of the Federico II
University of Naples, in cooperation with the Consortium for the
safeguard of buffalo mozzarella cheese of Campania and the
Experimental zooprophylactic institute of southern Italy.
The three-day congress will focus on many important issues
including genetics, animal nutrition, diet, as well as "animal
well-being and the eco-sustainability of productions, the
circular economy, the traceability of animal products, with a
particular focus on Campania's buffalo mozzarella cheese",
explained Salzano.
A buffalo tour has also been planned, including visits to
zootechnical companies.
