European Commissioner Glenn Micallef has called on EU member states to adopt new age verification tools aimed at better protecting children and teenagers from the harmful effects of social media.
According to Times of Malta, speaking during a debate in the European Parliament, Micallef said excessive screen time and the addictive nature of some platforms are becoming a growing concern for young people’s mental health.
“The protection of minors online is a priority for the Commission and for myself and it must go further,” he said.
The call comes as the European Commission continues to push for stronger safeguards for children online. Earlier this year, it adopted recommendations that would allow EU citizens to verify their age using privacy-focused technology that does not require users to share unnecessary personal information.
Micallef urged all EU countries to roll out these tools by the end of 2026.
The debate also touched on the responsibilities of social media platforms under the Digital Services Act, which requires companies to ensure high levels of safety, privacy and security for younger users. Platforms can also face consequences if children are able to access services intended only for adults.
Meanwhile, MEP Alex Agius Saliba warned that excessive scrolling and screen time can contribute to serious mental health issues among young people, arguing that stronger action is needed.
The discussion comes amid growing international scrutiny of social media platforms. The European Commission is currently studying Australia’s planned ban on social media access for under-16s, while UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer recently announced plans for a similar restriction.
In Malta, the government launched a public consultation on social media regulation last year as discussions continue over how best to protect younger users online.
