The mother of Swieqi Deputy Mayor Jordan Galea Pace has publicly defended her son after his recent comments about bottle collectors sparked discussion online.
Jordan Galea Pace recently shared a video explaining why he chose not to report a bottle collector to the police, instead urging residents to show empathy towards people collecting bottles through Malta’s BCRS scheme. His comments drew widespread reactions, with many praising his approach while others disagreed.
Responding to the attention, Ruth Galea Pace shared an emotional message describing the values she says have guided her son since childhood.
“Seeing all the beautiful comments on social media about my son has reminded me of how I’ve always known him growing up: kind-hearted and always empathetic towards others,” she wrote.
She recalled receiving a call from his secondary school after he won an Altruistic Award for standing up to bullies who were targeting a classmate with severe difficulties, even though doing so cost him friendships.
“His character has never changed,” she continued. “Even though he may have lost votes by refusing to report the bottle collector to the police, he did what he believed was right because he genuinely believes everyone deserves a chance.”
Ruth also revealed that after receiving criticism from a resident, Jordan replied: “If you don’t want to vote for me, that’s okay. My conscience is clear, but please vote for my colleagues.”
“It takes courage to stand by your principles, especially when it comes at a personal cost,” she concluded. “That is why I will always be proud to be your mother.”
