The Group of Seven (G7) leaders issued a declaration of support for President Trump’s agreement to end the Iran war amid the allied nations’ summit in France this week.
The alliance, which includes France, Germany, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, the United States and Italy, released a joint statement addressing geopolitical issues in Ukraine, the Middle East and the Indo-Pacific region on Wednesday.
They specifically commended the U.S.’s work in reaching a framework deal with Iran earlier this week to begin technical negotiations to end the war.
“We welcome the announcement of a deal between the United States and Iran, secured under the strong leadership of President Trump, with the support of mediating countries, which provides an historic opportunity to prevent Iran from acquiring any nuclear weapon and tackling the threats related to its regional and ballistic activities,” the leaders wrote. “We support and are ready to contribute to its implementation.”
The details of the agreement have yet to be officially released, but Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed to CNN on Tuesday that it included a 60-day ceasefire and provisions to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a major oil trading passage that has been effectively closed during the conflict and a U.S. naval blockade.
France and the U.K. will “play an important role” in reopening this waterway by protecting commercial ships and ensuring that mines are removed, according to the Wednesday letter.
“We strongly support a robust and comprehensive diplomatic follow-on agreement to the Memorandum of Understanding secured by President Trump that can bring peace and security for all in the region,” the leaders wrote. “We underline the need for the negotiation to this end to address the threats posed by Iran in the region and beyond and ensure that they never obtain a nuclear weapon.”
They added that this negotiation process would “benefit” from the insight of the International Atomic Energy Agency and other global partners.
The leaders also expressed a commitment to supporting a ceasefire in Lebanon, which has exchanged fire with Israel — a key U.S. ally — through the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah.
In his conversation with CNN on Tuesday after a meeting with G7 leaders in France, Carney said that this new framework agreement “sets the groundwork for a solution in Lebanon.”
“Of course, it has to be followed through, it has to be implemented, and I think one of the things is: the president helped create that deal … the rest of the G7 and the broader community need to help implement it,” Carney told the network.
