President Trump elicited laughter from leaders at the Group of Seven (G7) summit in France when he walked into a meeting Wednesday morning and declared, “I’m the boss.”
The U.S. president has been meeting with the heads of France, Canada, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and Germany this week as part of the annual conference, which is being held this year in Évian-les-Bains, France. Other international leaders have also been present at meetings this week.
Trump made the comment ahead of a meeting between G7 leaders and officials from the International Monetary Fund and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.
The president called the trip a “Great Success” in a Truth Social post on Wednesday morning before later holding a press conference.
“The trip was a Great Success but, mostly what people wanted to talk about, is the fact that Iran will not have a Nuclear Weapon, and that the Strait of Hormuz will immediately be opened!” the president wrote in the post.
The U.S. and Iran electronically signed a framework agreement to begin technical negotiations to end the conflict between the two nations and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. This key trading corridor, through which 20 percent of the world’s oil consumption flows through on a daily basis, has been effectively closed during the war and a U.S. naval blockade.
Soaring energy rates resulting from the backlog in the strait have placed the Trump administration under immense pressure to reopen the waterway. The president lauded his administration’s economic policies in his Wednesday morning Truth Social post.
“Great Numbers in all categories for the United States Economy with more people working today than have ever worked before,” he wrote. “Over 19.1 Trillion being invested in the U.S.A. with Factories and everything else happening but, importantly, recent Stock Market numbers are through the roof because of the settlement and, likewise, Oil Prices are tumbling down!”
During a bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday morning, the president was asked by a reporter about the warm reception he received from G7 members at the summit. This followed Trump’s criticism that European leaders had not done enough to support the U.S. in the Iran conflict.
“I think they think I was right,” Trump said. “Now all of a sudden they all want to be involved.”
