A new cultural venue dedicated to the life and work of Algarve artist Fonseca Martins has opened in Altura, bringing together an art gallery and museum under one roof.
The recently inaugurated Galeria de Arte Fonseca Martins welcomed more than 100 guests, including local officials, business leaders and art enthusiasts from across the region.
Located in the eastern Algarve, the new space aims to strengthen the cultural offering of the Sotavento (East Algarve) while creating a meeting point for residents, visitors and those interested in the region’s artistic heritage.
The venue is divided into two distinct areas. On the upper floor, visitors can browse a selection of artworks available for purchase, while the lower floor houses a museum dedicated to Fonseca Martins’ artistic legacy.
The museum charts more than six decades of exhibitions and creative work, offering an insight into the artist’s career and the evolution of his work over the years.
Speaking about the project, the promoters said the gallery was created to preserve and promote the memory of Fonseca Martins while making his work permanently accessible to the public.
“Our objective is to contribute to the enhancement of the cultural offer in the eastern Algarve, creating a space open to the community, visitors to the region and everyone interested in art and local history,” they said.
The opening marks a significant addition to the cultural landscape of the Algarve, where galleries and museums are often concentrated in larger towns and cities.
Supporters of the initiative say the new venue will help diversify the region’s year-round cultural attractions, offering another reason for visitors to explore the eastern Algarve beyond its beaches and natural landscapes.
Following the launch event, organisers thanked those who attended and encouraged the public to discover the new space for themselves.
The Galeria de Arte Fonseca Martins is open from Tuesday to Saturday, between 11am and 4.45pm.
Visitors can explore both the gallery and museum free of charge, with the founders hoping the project will inspire greater appreciation for local art and culture across the region.
The gallery is located at Avenida 24 Junho (Former BES Building), Altura.
