A 35-year-old man from Mellieħa was hospitalised after the boat he was on overturned near Mġarr Harbour, Gozo.
Police were called to the area at around 3.15pm yesterday after reports that assistance was needed at the harbour.
Preliminary investigations found that the man had run into difficulties while out on his boat, which capsized shortly before emergency services were alerted.
People in the vicinity rushed to help and managed to pull the man from the sea before providing first aid.
Members of the Armed Forces of Malta later transported him ashore at Mġarr Harbour, where he was met by an ambulance.
The man was initially taken to Gozo General Hospital before being transferred to Mater Dei Hospital, where he is at risk of dying.
Magistrate Monica Vella has opened a magisterial inquiry, while police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
