One of the western Algarve’s most iconic landmarks, the Sagres Fortress, is inviting visitors to explore some of its lesser-known stories and hidden details through a free themed tour later this month, as the historic monument continues its bid to be named one of Portugal’s New Seven Wonders.
The guided visit, titled “Wonders to Discover at the Fortaleza de Sagres“, will take place on Saturday, June 27 at 11am and is open to the public free of charge.
The initiative coincides with the fortress’s participation in the regional semi-final of the Novas 7 Maravilhas de Portugal competition, where it is representing the Algarve in the Castles category. The semi-final event is scheduled to take place in Olhão on the same day.
According to organisers, the visit will offer participants an opportunity to learn more about the history of one of Portugal’s most iconic monuments, while exploring aspects of the site that are often overlooked by visitors.
Perched on the dramatic cliffs of Portugal’s southwestern tip, the Fortaleza de Sagres is closely associated with the country’s maritime history and the Age of Discoveries, making it one of the Algarve’s most significant heritage attractions.
The tour will highlight the monument’s historical importance, the different forms of heritage it encompasses and some of the curiosities linked to its long history, while explaining why it remains such a powerful symbol of Portugal’s cultural identity.
Organisers also hope the event will encourage public support for the fortress’s candidacy in the New Seven Wonders competition.
“The initiative is an invitation for the community to participate actively in the promotion and recognition of an important element of Portugal’s national heritage,” organisers said.
The competition now moves into a public voting phase, with the future of the Sagres Fortress in the contest depending on the support it receives from the public.
Participation in the guided tour is free, but advance registration is required via email at [email protected].
Votes for the Fortaleza de Sagres can be cast by telephone on 761 207 087 or through the TVI Pass app.
