Good news for students and perhaps not so much for parents: Malta has one of the longest summer school holidays in Europe.
According to data based on the European Commission’s 2025/26 school calendar figures, Maltese students enjoy around 13 weeks of summer holidays, placing Malta among the top countries on the continent for time off school.
In fact, only Italy ranks higher, with students there receiving approximately 14 weeks of summer holidays.
Malta shares second place with countries including Latvia, Moldova, Georgia and Cyprus, all of which also offer around 13 weeks away from the classroom during the summer months.
Meanwhile, countries such as Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark and Switzerland provide students with just six weeks of summer holidays, less than half of what students in Malta receive.
However, the figures come with an important caveat. Longer summer holidays do not necessarily mean more time off overall. In countries like Italy, for example, students generally have fewer breaks throughout the rest of the academic year, meaning much of their holiday time is concentrated in summer.
The data also represents national averages and can vary depending on region, school type and local education systems.
Still, for generations of Maltese students, the long summer break has become a rite of passage, bringing months of beach days, festas, late nights and freedom before returning to school in autumn.
And with Malta sitting near the very top of the European rankings, it’s safe to say local students are among the luckiest on the continent when it comes to summer time off.
Would you trade a shorter summer for more holidays throughout the year?
