Metres upon metres of abandoned plastic nets that had been lying on the seabed near the Marsamxett water polo pitch for years have finally been removed.
The clean-up was organised by the Coast is Clear Foundation and saw volunteers recover large amounts of plastic netting that had become embedded in the marine environment after years underwater.
The discarded nets posed a potential threat to marine life, with plastic debris known to entangle animals and damage fragile underwater ecosystems.
Footage from the operation shows divers pulling sections of the nets from the seabed before bringing them ashore for disposal.
According to organisers, the clean-up forms part of ongoing efforts to tackle marine pollution and remove long-forgotten waste from Malta’s coastal waters.
