Jakarta (ANTARA) - Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman reported to President Prabowo Subianto that national rice reserves are in a safe condition and are projected to be sufficient to meet demand for approximately the next 10 months.
Speaking after a limited meeting with President Prabowo at the Presidential Palace here on Thursday, Sulaiman stated that national rice stocks currently stand at around 5.2 million tons. In addition, potential production from standing crops is estimated at 10-11 million tons.
According to him, rice availability held by households, hotels, and restaurants is also estimated at around 12.5 million tons.
"This means that with these reserves, all three sources could cover the next 10-11 months. If we take the lower estimate of 10 months, it means from July until April, which is 10 months ahead, supplies will be sufficient, while peak harvest season begins in March," Sulaiman explained.
He added that the situation provides an important step for addressing the potential impacts of the Godzilla El Nino phenomenon.
The government, he said, has prepared a number of mitigation measures to maintain food production, including the construction of small reservoirs, pump irrigation systems, deep wells, pumping facilities, optimization of swamp land, and the development of new rice fields.
Through land optimization, the minister noted, swamp land that previously yielded only one harvest is being improved to produce up to two or three harvests per year.
"We will also continue developing new rice fields. All of these measures can mitigate the risks. Once again, God willing, food supplies will remain secure," he said.
Earlier, Agriculture Ministry Secretary General Suwandi, during a press conference here on Wednesday (June 17), emphasized that the food sector is a crucial foundation for the nation's resilience and sovereignty.
Therefore, the government continues to undertake various efforts to ensure food production remains optimal amid climate challenges.
