Three more teenagers have contacted police following the arraignment of a 26-year-old Gozo man accused of using fake social media profiles to target and blackmail minors.
According to Times of Malta, the three alleged victims, all girls aged around 15, came forward after Gian-Luke Gambin was charged with 56 offences, including the alleged sexual exploitation and corruption of minors, blackmail, and the production and distribution of indecent material.
Gambin has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The latest reports were made shortly after the court authorised the publication of both the accused’s identity and the online alias he allegedly used to communicate with victims, “Chris Debrincat”.
The three teenagers provided statements that closely resemble those already given by other alleged victims.
Investigators believe there could be more people affected, particularly as one of the alleged fake profiles reportedly amassed more than 2,000 followers online.
The case first gained national attention following allegations involving two sisters aged 10 and 12.
Court heard that the accused allegedly coerced the older girl into sending indecent images before threatening to publish them. When her younger sister attempted to intervene, he allegedly demanded images from her as well, warning that he would otherwise release the older sibling’s photos.
The incident was reported to police by the girls’ parents and ultimately led to Gambin’s arrest.
During his arraignment, a request for bail was denied due to the sensitive nature of the case and the fact that several young witnesses have yet to testify.
Police are continuing their investigations and have urged anyone who may have been targeted or who has relevant information to come forward.
The prosecution is being led by Attorney General lawyers Miriayah Borg and Tilden Tabone, assisted by Police Inspectors Dorianne Tabone, Ryan Vella and Keith Scerri. Gambin is being represented by defence lawyers Mario Mifsud and Nicholas Mifsud.
