Picture a female dog born on the streets of the Eastern Algarve. Left unsterilised, she and her descendants could – according to the SPCA – produce up to 67,000 more dogs within just six years – each one at risk of hunger, injury and a short, brutal life. It is a sobering statistic, and it is exactly the reality that StreetLife has been working to change since it was founded in Moncarapacho in 2017.
Nearly a decade on, the scale of what has been achieved is remarkable – and it is growing with every passing month. Behind it is a dedicated community of supporters, fundraisers and donors – among them 80 StreetBuddies giving just €5 a month.
Those numbers are the product of a simple but powerful idea. When COVID struck in 2019 and public fundraising became impossible, StreetLife asked supporters to do one thing: pledge €5 a month – the price of a coffee – to keep the programme alive. The StreetBuddy scheme was born, and it has been growing ever since.
Behind every sterilisation is a quietly remarkable network of people: StreetEye volunteers – many of them Portuguese-speaking – who identify families in need and carry out home visits; partner vets who perform the procedures; and partner shelters who benefit from more adoptable, sterilised dogs. But it is the applicant families themselves who are, as the team is keen to stress, truly indispensable. “Without the applicants, we don’t get the dogs!”
That collective spirit was on full display at StreetLife’s most recent twice-yearly StreetBuddy Coffee Morning – a “thank you” gathering where supporters heard the latest figures first-hand. And what figures they were:
nearly 1,800 dogs sterilised and microchipped across the Eastern Algarve;
€36,000 raised by 80 dedicated StreetBuddies since 2019;
and over 126 applications received in just six weeks during the spring “Be Wise – Sterilise!” campaign alone – with the final count still to come.
An occasion that is as much a celebration of what has been achieved as a rallying call for what still needs to be done.
