A 23-year-old man has pleaded guilty to threatening the manager of HSBC’s Żurrieq branch with a screwdriver after being refused a larger cash withdrawal.
According to Times of Malta, the court heard that police were called to the bank at around 12.45pm on 17th June after reports of a man standing outside the branch shouting threats while holding a screwdriver.
Witnesses heard the man repeatedly shout, “I will kill you, I will kill you.”
The accused, whose identity cannot be published by court order due to mental health issues, had reportedly gone to the bank seeking to withdraw an amount that exceeded the limit placed on his account.
When the request was denied by the branch manager, he allegedly became aggressive and threatened retaliation.
After leaving the bank, the man went to his mother’s home. The court heard that the branch manager later phoned the man’s mother to inform her about the incident.
While the two were speaking, the accused allegedly grabbed the phone and threatened to kill the manager.
He then returned to the bank armed with a screwdriver and continued shouting threats outside the premises. The man pleaded guilty to all charges brought against him.
Defence lawyers requested a pre-sentencing report before punishment is handed down, a request which was accepted by the court.
Pending sentencing, the accused was granted bail on condition that he lives with his parents, signs a bail book at a police station three times a week and provides a personal guarantee of €7,000.
A protection order was also issued in favour of the victim.
The prosecution was led by Inspector Andrew Agius Bonello. Lawyers Franco Debono and Silvan Pulis appeared for the accused.
