Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto has urged the State-Owned Banks Association (Himbara) to look beyond profit generation and strengthen its contribution to society by expanding access to financial services and economic opportunities.
Himbara comprises Indonesia’s major state-owned lenders: Bank Mandiri, Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI), Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI), Bank Tabungan Negara (BTN), and Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI).
Speaking after a four-hour meeting at the Presidential Palace on Thursday evening, Investment and Downstreaming Minister Rosan Roeslani said the President delivered the firm directive during discussions with the boards of directors and commissioners of the state-owned banks.
"The President instructed all banks and their boards of commissioners not to focus solely on profit, but also to ensure their presence is felt by the public by providing equal opportunities for MSMEs, the commercial sector, and corporations," Rosan said.
Rosan, who also serves as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the sovereign investment agency Danantara Indonesia, noted that the President expressed strong optimism about Indonesia’s economic prospects.
In light of this outlook, the government expects state-owned banks to play a more proactive role in expanding access to financing and reducing barriers to credit across all segments of society.
During the meeting, Prabowo also reviewed the market capitalization of the five state-owned banking institutions.
According to Rosan, Bank Mandiri’s market capitalization stands at around Rp450 trillion (US$25.28 billion), while BRI’s market value is slightly above Rp450 trillion. BNI’s market capitalization is approximately Rp200 trillion (US$11.24 billion), with BTN and BSI also making significant contributions.
"If combined, their total market capitalization reaches around Rp1,100 trillion (US$61.8 billion), representing roughly 10 percent of Indonesia’s total market capitalization," he said.
Rosan added that the combined valuation highlights Himbara’s strategic role in supporting economic stability and driving national economic growth.
