The Lula administration acknowledges concerns about Donald Trump interfering in Brazil’s elections and believes it is necessary to monitor any signs of the U.S. president’s involvement. Diplomats say Trump’s attempt to interfere in the electoral process is becoming increasingly clear, although an anonymous source stressed that "Brazil is not Venezuela."
The reference comes after Trump captured Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro and suggested invading other countries in the region. During the G7, Trump called Brazil’s political situation dangerous and defended the Bolsonaro family. The government says U.S. interest in the Southern Hemisphere cannot be underestimated and that it is necessary to "keep an eye on it."
At the Planalto Palace, allies of President Lula argue for an immediate response. The Brazilian leader’s statement in response to Trump —"do not interfere in Brazil’s elections"— already indicates the tone the government intends to adopt.
A faction within the government, however, points out that Trump’s signals have been contradictory and that it is necessary to understand what is going on in the U.S. president’s mind. This is because, while saying he likes Lula, he also supports the Bolsonaro family.
