The Pope of Trash has weighed in on the future of artificial intelligence as many remain divided on its place in Hollywood.
In a recent interview, John Waters explained that he thought AI “would be good for pornography” but discovered he was wrong, and he would never use it “to help me write” as he prepares to compose introductions for his Mosswood Meltdown punk festival on July 17-19 in Oakland.
“Not to help me write. I would use AI to cure cancer,” he told Billboard of his thoughts on AI. “But not to write, no. I saw something that was written supposedly for me by AI, and it was just like a really bad first draft — but yes, it was a first draft.”
Waters continued, “To me, no. I wouldn’t do it. I wouldn’t know how to do it even if I wanted to. I think I always thought it would be good for pornography, but you can tell. It looks too good. I thought I would like it but I don’t. It looks too good.”
The use of AI in Hollywood continues to be a hot-button topic. Meanwhile, SAG-AFTRA has endorsed the Trump administration’s AI policy framework, which calls for Congress to enact legislation that includes parental controls, intellectual property rights protection, First Amendment protections, expanding AI workforce development, allowing data centers to generate their own power and removing legal barriers that limit AI innovation.
Earlier this month, Trump signed an executive order for voluntary framework in which AI companies would provide the government with access to new models for a 30-day review period before their release.
