MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police – Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP–CIDG) has subpoenaed Ateneo de Manila University president Fr. Roberto Yap, according to Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla.
This is in connection with the police’s investigation into the fatal drownings of Ateneo men’s basketball players Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.
(There are graduation rites in Ateneo now. That’s why he couldn’t come… He sent word,” Remulla told reporters in Camp Crame on Friday.

Remulla also noted that Ateneo men’s basketball team manager Epok Quimpo likewise has yet to personally appear before the PNP–CIDG, but he did not say whether Quimpo was expected to attend on another date.
Earlier on Friday, former Ateneo men’s basketball head coach Tab Baldwin, coaching staff Dean Castaño and athletics director Em Fernandez appeared before the PNP–CIDG in Camp Crame for the investigation into Baterbonia and Adili’s deaths, according to the secretary.
Baterbonia and Adili died after being swept away by waves during a training activity along the shoreline of Dipaculao, Aurora last June 8.
Yap previously apologized to the bereaved families for the student-athletes’ deaths.
For his part, Baldwin also apologized over the incident and resigned from his post./coa
