Former Livorno captain Igor Protti dies aged 58

Club legend had been battling illness for some time

Former Livorno captain Igor Protti

died late on Thursday at the age of 58 after a long illness, his

family announced "with immense sorrow" in an Instagram post on

Friday.

The forward scored 120 goals in two stints with the Tuscan club.

In the second stint, between 1999 and 2005, he helped Livorno to

climb from the third tier up to Serie A.

The club retired his number 10 shirt after he quit in the game

in 2005 following a season in which he helped them to finish

ninth in the top flight.

He was also Serie A's joint-top scorer in the Giuseppe Signori

in the 1995-96 season with 24 goals during a stint with Bari.

Protti's body will lie in state at Livorno's stadium for

mourners to pay the respects and city will declare a day of

mourning when his funeral takes place.
