Pontianak. West Kalimantan (ANTARA) - West Kalimantan Governor Ria Norsan officially opened the Pontianak Bakcang Festival 2026 to strengthen tolerance, preserve cultural heritage, and promote the development of tourism based on local wisdom.
"Through this tradition, which has been passed down from generation to generation by the Chinese community, we learn that culture is not only an identity but also a medium for strengthening the values of togetherness, gratitude, and harmony in social life," he said here on Friday.
He explained that the Bakcang Festival is not merely a cultural celebration of the Chinese community but also reflects the harmonious coexistence of the province's multiethnic society, which has long been a source of social strength in West Kalimantan.
He noted that the bakcang tradition embodies various philosophical values that remain relevant to contemporary society.
The four corners of a bakcang symbolize four life values: Zizu, which teaches contentment with what one has; Gan En, which emphasizes the importance of gratitude; San Jie, which encourages positive thinking; and Bao Rong, which promotes embracing, accepting, and respecting others.
According to him, these values are in line with efforts to foster a harmonious society amid the ethnic, religious, and cultural diversity of West Kalimantan.
Norsan emphasized that diversity is an important social asset in supporting regional development. Therefore, all elements of society must maintain unity and strengthen tolerance to ensure that West Kalimantan remains conducive to sustainable development.
"Let's preserve the noble culture inherited from our ancestors so that it can be passed on to our children and grandchildren. Although we live in diversity, let's remain united in developing the West Kalimantan that we love," he said.
