The Nationalist Party is set to nominate former leader Bernard Grech as parliament’s next deputy speaker when the new legislature officially opens on Saturday.
The move will see Grech succeed David Agius in the role, with the deputy speaker traditionally coming from the Opposition benches.
The PN is also expected to back the government’s nomination of Carmelo Abela as Speaker of the House.
Abela was announced as Labour’s choice earlier this week and is set to resign his parliamentary seat to take up the position.
Grech led the Nationalist Party between 2020 and June 2025, before stepping down following last month’s general election. He was re-elected to parliament from the 11th district and has since continued serving as an Opposition MP.
If approved by parliament, Grech will be responsible for presiding over sittings whenever the Speaker is absent.
Unlike the Speaker, the deputy speaker retains their parliamentary seat.
Parliament will vote on both appointments when it convenes for the first sitting of the new legislature on Saturday.
