Home Affairs Minister Glenn Bedingfield has pushed back against reports surrounding a prisoner allegedly using a laptop with internet access inside Corradino Correctional Facility.
In a statement shared on social media, Bedingfield said claims that a prisoner had secretly brought a laptop into prison were incorrect.
According to the minister, the prisoner had actually been granted permission to use a laptop around two years ago, on the condition that it did not have internet access.
However, the prisoner was later found to have accessed the internet using the device.
Bedingfield said immediate action was taken once the breach was discovered and the prisoner was held accountable.
An internal inquiry has now been launched and will be led by Judge Emeritus Dr Antonio Mizzi, who has been tasked with investigating exactly what happened.
The inquiry is expected to be completed within 30 days, after which any necessary consequences and actions will be implemented.
The case has sparked public discussion in recent days, particularly following questions about how a prisoner was able to gain internet access from within Malta’s correctional facility.
Authorities are now awaiting the findings of the inquiry to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
What do you think of these claims?
