Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia MotoGP in Mandalika, West Nusa Tenggara, generated an economic impact of Rp4.96 trillion (around US$278 million) in 2025, according to Indonesia's Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs.
The ministry's secretary Susiwijono Moegiarso said the figure was driven by increased tourist arrivals, activity in the transportation and accommodation sectors, trade, and various business activities involving local communities and enterprises.
The achievement shows that Indonesia MotoGP has made a significant contribution to the national economy while strengthening the country's position as a host of international events.
"Hosting this event shows the trust of the international community. Not every country that can afford to pay is trusted to host such an event. That is the key," Susiwijono said in a statement on Saturday.
He added that Indonesia's ability to host MotoGP for five consecutive years reflects the high level of international confidence in the country's capacity to organize global-scale events.
At the same event, Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir said sports tourism and the sports industry have strong potential to drive economic growth.
"We believe in promoting sports tourism and the sports industry, including by ensuring that the government, the private sector, and the public all contribute to economic growth," he said.
Meanwhile, West Nusa Tenggara Deputy Governor Indah Dhamayanti Putri said MotoGP has provided broad economic benefits for local communities, including through the involvement of more than 600 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in supporting activities.
The event has also strengthened the appeal of Mandalika and other tourist destinations in West Nusa Tenggara, while creating investment opportunities and attracting more visitors.
Deputy for Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation at the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) Vivi Yulaswati said sports tourism has evolved into an industry capable of generating significant economic value.
Besides generating trillions of rupiah in economic impact, MotoGP has also contributed to job creation and the development of a sustainable tourism and sports ecosystem, she added.
Indonesia is scheduled to host the 2026 Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia on October 9-11, at the Mandalika International Circuit in the Mandalika Special Economic Zone, West Nusa Tenggara.
Entering its fifth year since its debut in 2022, the world-class motorcycle racing event has grown into one of Indonesia's largest sports tourism attractions, contributing to the national economy and tourism sector.
