Scottie Thompson credits Ginebra teammates after Finals MVP win

MANILA, Philippines—Scottie Thompson remained as humble as ever after adding another Finals MVP trophy to his collection in Barangay Ginebra’s PBA Commissioner’s Cup title run.

After winning the Ramon Fernandez Finals MVP award, Thompson admitted he was surprised when his name was called.

That reaction stemmed from his belief that several of his teammates were just as deserving of the honor.

“I’m truly blessed but I don’t know if I deserve it because there were so many others who could have won it,” Thompson told the Inquirer at Mall of Asia Arena on Wednesday.

“A lot of our guys played well, a lot of guys carried us so I’m truly blessed and honored.”

Thompson captured the third Finals MVP award of his career after averaging 10 points, 6.9 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 1.3 steals entering Game 7.

In the winner-take-all contest, which Ginebra won 88-76, the Gilas Pilipinas guard delivered a near triple-double of 19 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists.

Among the other standouts in the series were reigning Best Player of the Conference RJ Abarrientos, who scored 13 points in Game 7, and Troy Rosario, who added 13 points and seven rebounds in the championship-clinching victory.

For Thompson, however, individual accolades took a back seat to ending Ginebra’s title drought.

“We, as a team, bounced back and the good performances individually just followed,” he said.

“Overall, we didn’t really think of the past or the future, we just stayed in the moment, focused on the game and the result followed.”
