Morocco has won its first match in the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 1-0 victory over Scotland at the Boston stadium.
The Atlas Lions were the first on the scene in the second group match, with Ismae Saibari scoring 71 seconds into the encounter with a wonderful strike that proved enough for the disputed African champions to set a record of six consecutive World Cup matches without defeat for an African nation.
Morocco’s last defeat in the group stage was at the 2018 World Cup. Mohamed Ouahbi’s side kept the Scots at arm’s length despite a late spark to claim all three points that takes them to joint top of Group C alongside Brazil who defeated Haiti 3-0.
Mattheus Cunha scored an early brace before Vinicius Jr. who provided an assist, slotted home the third goal to seal a comfortable victory that sealed Haiti’s exit from the tournament as the bottom nation in the group.
Similarly, Turkey become the first high-ranking nation to crash out of the World Cup following a 1-0 loss to 10-man Paraguay in a shocking turn of events. The Turks were undone by Matias Galarza’s goal 64 seconds into the match, and could not find an equalizer despite playing the second half with a man advantage, enjoying 78% possession, and attempting 32 shots in total. Paraguay were reduced to 10 men when Miguel Almiron was sent off for covering mouth while talking to a Turkish player during a confrontation, with the referee showing him a red card after VAR confirmed the incident.
The 32-year-old Paraguayan becomes the first ever player to be sent off using the new rule introduced earlier in the year after a Benfica player directed alleged racist slur at Vinicius Jr. during a UEFA Champions League match.
Co-hosts, the United States of America, earlier secured their passage into the round of 32 with a 2-0 win over Australia.
Folarin Balogun’s cross forced an 11th-minute own goal by Cameron Burgess, before Alex Freeman ensured victory with a 43rd minute goal as USA sealed consecutive World Cup victories in their first two matches for the first time since 1930.
