A 33-year-old man and his four-year-old daughter died in the early hours of Sunday after the man reportedly jumped from the eighth floor of a residential building in Santarém, according to witness accounts cited by the PSP police.
The alert was raised at around 3am, prompting a response from PSP officers, firefighters and emergency medical teams.
According to the PSP, witness accounts indicate that an argument took place before the incident. Police said the man lived in the apartment with the child and had a history of domestic violence.
Both died following the fall.
The case has been handed over to the Polícia Judiciária (PJ), which is leading the investigation.
According to Correio da Manhã, investigators are examining whether the incident occurred following an argument between the man and his partner. The newspaper reported that the father may have jumped from the building while holding the child, although those details have not been officially confirmed by the PJ.
Emergency responders, including firefighters, INEM personnel and PSP officers, were dispatched to the scene in the early hours of the morning. Psychological support teams have also been made available to relatives.
