Jakarta (ANTARA) - Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir said running events that combine sports and cultural tourism can strengthen sports tourism and help drive regional economic growth in Indonesia.
Speaking at the opening of the Mandiri Jogja Marathon 2026 at Prambanan Temple on Sunday, Thohir said sports tourism can help improve the profile of regional tourist destinations.
"The Mandiri Jogja Marathon is very positive because Yogyakarta is one of Indonesia's tourism centers. It ranks fourth for international tourist arrivals, while Bali remains first," he said.
Thohir said sports tourism should be promoted alongside tourism based on culture and natural attractions.
He praised the Mandiri Jogja Marathon, which is being held for the seventh time this year.
Participation has increased significantly over the years, with this year's event attracting a record 10,200 runners from 17 countries.
"This event is very positive. I believe sports tourism not only promotes public health but also supports economic growth," Thohir said.
"That is why new growth sectors need to be developed, and sports tourism is one of them," he added.
Thohir said the marathon also helps encourage broader public participation in sports and physical fitness.
According to ministry data, only 17 percent of Indonesians regularly participate in sports despite the country's relatively young population.
"Indonesia now has 104 marathon events, with nearly 10.6 million runners, which should help increase sports participation," he said.
The ministry is also encouraging all districts and cities to organize Car Free Day events to promote exercise among residents.
Of Indonesia's 514 districts and cities, only about 220 currently hold regular Car Free Day activities.
"Car Free Day can encourage people to start walking or jogging and eventually participate in marathons like this," Thohir said.
The Mandiri Jogja Marathon 2026 features four categories: the marathon, half marathon, 10K and 5K fun run.
Held under the theme "More Than a Race," the event combines international-standard competition with tourism, cultural celebrations and socially impactful travel experiences across Yogyakarta.
