The sixth edition of the annual Davnotch National Tennis Championship served off yesterday in Abuja with a series of exciting preliminary-round matches.
Both the men’s and women’s main draws of the competition will commence on Monday, June 22 (today).
The championship, organised by the Nigeria Tennis Federation and hosted at MKO Abiola National Stadium (Package B), was first introduced in May 2021 and has since become a key fixture on Nigeria’s domestic tennis calendar.
According to the organisers, the tournament is aimed at providing a competitive platform for home-based players, particularly young talents, to develop their skills and gain valuable match experience.
The competition also offers budding Nigerian tennis stars an opportunity to gain exposure that could help them progress to international circuits.
In addition, the tournament features dedicated men’s and women’s wheelchair tennis events, underscoring its commitment to supporting physically challenged athletes.
The week-long championship, scheduled to conclude on June 27, 2026, promises several innovations, including enhanced prize money and improved welfare packages for players, officials and spectators.
One of the unique aspects of this year’s edition is the dual role being played by Hon. Victor Ochei, who serves as President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation and Chairman of Davnotch Nigeria Limited, the tournament’s sponsor.
Meanwhile, at the 2025 edition of the Davnotch tennis championship, Daniel Adeleye claimed the men’s singles title after defeating Canice Abua 6-3, 6-2. In the women’s singles final, Success Ogunjobi defeated Bright-Essien Emmanuel 6-1, 6-1 to emerge champion.
