
MANILA, Philippines — The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) condemned the reported shooting of broadcaster Jay Lavapiez by unidentified motorcycle-riding suspects in Roxas City, Capiz, on Monday.
Lavapiez was driving along a national highway in Barangay Cagay at around 5 a.m. on his way to the radio station when he was attacked.
Lavapiez survived the attack. Authorities later recovered four spent shell casings at the scene.

“We condemn all acts of violence and intimidation against journalists and assert that such actions have no place in a democratic society,” PTFOMS said in a statement.
“This incident highlights the urgent need to protect journalists, who play an important role in informing the public and upholding democracy,” it also said.
PTFOMS and the Philippine National Police Media Vanguards are conducting an investigation into the incident.
“We stand in solidarity with Mr. Lavapiez and all media professionals, reaffirming our commitment to safeguarding their rights and security. The freedom of the press is essential to our democracy, and we will continue to advocate for measures that protect those who strive to uphold this freedom every day,” said PTFOMS.

The task force also urged media organizations, civil society groups, and government agencies to work together to strengthen the security of journalists.
“Together, we can foster an environment where media professionals can operate without fear, ensuring the critical flow of information that is vital to our society,” PTFOMS said. /gsg
