The Chairman of Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory, Hon. Danjuma Samuel Shekwolo, has expressed concern over indiscriminate waste disposal across Kuje town.
Speaking with journalists during an inspection tour of refuse evacuation in the area on Friday, Shekwolo said indiscriminate waste disposal posed serious health hazards to residents.
He described the dumpsites as environmental hazards and an eyesore that tarnishes the image of the council and portrays it as unclean.
The chairman said his administration could not afford to allow heaps of refuse to litter strategic locations within the town, adding that because Kuje Area Council is close to the nation’s capital, every street must be kept clean.
According to him, the administration is committed to ensuring a cleaner, healthier and more organised environment for residents, which informed his decision to direct environmental officials to immediately embark on the evacuation of refuse.
“And we will do everything within our powers to ensure that refuse collection in Kuje is properly structured and managed in a manner that will facilitate easy evacuation and disposal,” he said.
The chairman, however, said his administration would collaborate with the Satellite Towns Development Department (STDD) of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to achieve sustainable environmental sanitation.
He emphasised that a healthy environment is essential for economic growth, public health and community development.
“Because a healthy environment is a productive environment, we cannot continue on this trajectory of indiscriminate waste disposal. Our administration is determined to restore cleanliness and environmental sanity across Kuje,” he added.
