Jayapura (ANTARA) - The government has allocated around Rp8 trillion (nearly US$450 million) to support the renovation of 400,000 uninhabitable homes across Indonesia, Home Affairs Minister Muhammad Tito Karnavian said.
“The number of homes to be renovated in various regions across Indonesia has increased significantly, from around 45,000 in 2025 to approximately 400,000 in 2026,” he remarked during a visit to Jayapura City, Papua Province, cited on Monday.
Tito explained that President Prabowo Subianto had tasked the Ministry of Housing and Settlements Areas with implementing the program nationwide, with support from the State Budget and other funding sources.
He added that the government would prioritize regions with high numbers of uninhabitable homes while also taking into account areas with low home ownership rates.
“Based on government data, Papua remains among the regions with high percentages. Therefore, it has been designated as one of the priority areas,” the minister said.
He also highlighted the Self-help Housing Stimulant Assistance (BSPS) program, noting that it will cover 22,379 housing units across the Papuan provinces.
“This number represents a significant increase,” Tito stressed.
Furthermore, he said home renovation works are scheduled to begin simultaneously on June 2026, and are targeted for completion by August 2026.
Tito made the remarks during a visit to Mosso Village in Muara Tami, describing the visit as proof of the government’s concern for residents in Papua, especially those living in border areas such as Mosso.
Meanwhile, Jayapura Mayor Abisair Rollo reported the Ministry of Housing and Settlements Areas had allocated 499 housing units under the program for the city.
“There will be 36 homes renovated in Mosso Village. We have also witnessed an open tender process for building material suppliers, which is aimed at selecting suppliers offering the most competitive prices for this program,” he said.
The mayor further praised the central government for bringing the program to Jayapura and for providing financial assistance to help the local administration ensure access to decent housing for residents.
