MANILA, Philippines — The Senate has requested the Philippine National Police (PNP) for “security assistance” amid the chamber’s upcoming activities, the latter agency said on Monday.
Tensions in the Senate escalated recently after the ouster of Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III last May, followed by the ouster of Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano last June 3 and the election of Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian at the special session last June 17.
“The Philippine National Police… has received a request for security assistance from the Senate of the Philippines as part of its preventive measures and contingency planning for upcoming official activities,” the PNP said in a statement.

“The PNP emphasizes that there is currently no identified or validated threat associated with the said activities. The request is part of normal preventive measures to ensure the safe and orderly conduct of government functions,” it added.
The national police force further noted that it had conducted a security survey inspection of the Senate and its surrounding areas to guide the security deployment and its contingency plans.
“The PNP assures the Senate and the public of its continued commitment to maintaining peace and order and ensuring the safety of all stakeholders through proactive and professional law enforcement measures,” the law enforcement agency added.
