Keir Starmer has announced that he will step down as Prime Minister, bringing an end to his time leading the United Kingdom and triggering a race to determine Labour’s next leader.
Speaking from Downing Street, Starmer confirmed he would be resigning following mounting pressure within his own party and weeks of speculation about his political future.
The announcement comes after growing unrest among Labour MPs following a series of poor election results and declining public support for the government.
Attention is now turning to who could replace him, with many within Labour viewing former Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham as the clear frontrunner. Burnham was recently elected as MP for Makerfield and has emerged as the favourite to succeed Starmer.
Reports from Westminster suggest Labour could seek a swift transition, with some party figures hoping to avoid a lengthy leadership contest altogether.
Starmer became Prime Minister after leading Labour to victory in the 2024 general election, ending 14 years of Conservative government.
More details on the timetable for his departure and Labour’s succession process are expected shortly.
