Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian Ambassador to Colombia Tatang Razak served as an international observer in monitoring the second round of Colombia's presidential election, following an invitation from the country’s electoral authorities.
According to a press release from the Indonesian Embassy in Bogota received on Monday, Razak was the only Asian observer officially invited by the Colombian National Electoral Council (Colombian Consejo Nacional Electoral/CNE), along with observers from more than 20 countries.
Observations were conducted at several polling locations, including Medellin for the first round and Bogota for the second round.
Voting closed on Saturday (June 20) local time amid concerns of potential unrest due to political polarization.
The election proceeded smoothly without major incidents, despite earlier reports of violence against journalists and several candidates.
After polls closed at 4:00 p.m. local time, international observers then monitored the vote-counting process at the election command center.
The quick count of all votes cast shows right-wing candidate Abelardo de la Espriella leading with 12,950,642 votes, or 49.65 percent.
Meanwhile, left-wing candidate Ivan Cepeda, supported by President Gustavo Petro, received 12,702,592 votes, or 48.70 percent.
The election commission is scheduled to announce the official election results within a week.
Ambassador Tatang Razak has been in office since his appointment by the seventh President Joko Widodo on October 25, 2021.
During his tenure, he consistently supports efforts to strengthen Indonesia–Colombia relations, stressing that the geographical distance between the two countries should not hinder the development of closer ties, particularly in the economic and trade sectors.
He is also actively pursuing trade cooperation with Colombian counterparts, including businesses engaged in healthcare, tourism, technology, agro-industry, fruit production, agriculture, the confectionery industry, construction, transportation, coffee, and other productive sectors.
