MANILA, Philippines — Ateneo de Manila University President Fr. Roberto Yap’s scheduled appearance before the Philippine National Police–Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP–CIDG) has been moved to Friday, June 26.
This is in connection with the CIDG’s investigation into the fatal drowning of Ateneo basketball players Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili during a training exercise along the shoreline of Dipaculao, Aurora, earlier this month.
“We also have to get the side or statement of the institution itself as represented by, I understand, the president. As far as I know, he is scheduled to appear on Friday,” PNP public information chief Col. Allen Rae Co said in a press briefing at Camp Crame on Monday morning.

Yap was initially set to appear before the CIDG investigation on Thursday, June 25, according to Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla.
The CIDG has subpoenaed at least 48 individuals for the investigation into Baterbonia and Adili’s deaths.
Resigned Ateneo head coach Tab Baldwin appeared before the CIDG last Friday.
Remulla said based on Baldwin’s and the coaching staff’s initial statements, there were inconsistencies between their account of events and that of the players.

Remulla explained that the inconsistencies may have been due to differences in vantage points, since the players were in the water while the coaching staff, including Baldwin, were on the shore.
Neither Baldwin nor the CIDG gave statements to the media regarding his appearance before the investigation last Friday.

“All of these statements, not only of the coach, are still being processed,” Co said in Filipino.
“We would not like to comment or release some of the parts of the statements so as not to unduly prejudice the public. There may be prejudgment for parties involved. Nevertheless, we will be checking with the CIDG for any updates,” he added.
Baldwin earlier apologized for Baterbonia and Adili’s deaths and has resigned from his post.
Meanwhile, Co said Remulla, PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr., and CIDG Director Maj. Gen. Robert Morico II held a conference regarding the Ateneo case at the CIDG headquarters in Camp Crame on Monday morning.
