The Rotary Club of Silves held a charity concert on Saturday, June 13, at the charming Teatro Mascarenhas Gregório, raising €2,000 for the club’s education projects.
The audience was captivated by performances from a well-known Brazilian quartet led by Tuka, who entertained guests with a programme featuring Latin American classics, reggae and contemporary pop interpretations. The lively performance even inspired some audience members to dance in the aisles.
Thanks to the generosity of those attending, the club will be able to continue its work with local schools throughout 2026 and into 2027.
Projects include funding 14 students from Agrupamento de Escolas de Silves Sul to join more than 300 participants at a Model United Nations conference at Cheadle Hulme School (Greater Manchester). This will mark the third consecutive year that students from Silves have taken part.
The two teams of six students will represent Portugal and Mozambique, while two former participants have been selected as guest committee chairs for the Youth and Environment committees.
Preparations are already under way for the club’s next major fundraising initiative: a sponsored walk from Monchique to Cabo de São Vicente to raise money for therapies supporting young children with language and learning difficulties.
Scheduled for October, the walk follows the success of the club’s 2022 fundraising trek from Valença do Minho to Santiago de Compostela.
Club president Pam Winn thanked the event’s sponsors and supporters, with special recognition for Tuka and his band, the Silves Municipality for providing the theatre, theatre staff Pedro and João, and Quinta dos Sentidos for supplying wines for guests.
