Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro begins a three-day visit to the United States today, combining support for Portugal’s World Cup campaign with meetings aimed at strengthening economic ties and engaging with the Portuguese diaspora.
The visit, which runs until Thursday, June 25, was announced by the PM’s office in May and includes a programme focused on Portuguese communities abroad, business and investment promotion, and events linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup being hosted jointly by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
One of the key moments of the trip will be Montenegro’s attendance at Portugal’s second Group K match of the tournament.
The prime minister is expected to be in Houston tomorrow to watch Portugal take on Uzbekistan in what will be a crucial fixture as the national team seeks qualification for the knockout stages of the expanded 48-team competition.
Portugal’s group also includes Colombia and the Democratic Republic of Congo – with the top two teams in each group and the eight best third-placed sides advancing to the next round.
Economic and diaspora agenda
Beyond football, the visit includes meetings with representatives of the Portuguese-American community, one of Portugal’s largest overseas diasporas.
According to the prime minister’s office, the trip also has a significant economic component, aimed at reinforcing relations between Portugal and the United States and promoting investment and business cooperation opportunities.
The programme is expected to include contacts with business leaders and economic stakeholders, reflecting Lisbon’s efforts to deepen commercial links with one of Portugal’s ‘most important international partners’.
President António José Seguro to follow
Montenegro’s trip will be followed by a separate World Cup-related visit by Portuguese President António José Seguro.
Portugal’s parliament has unanimously approved the president’s travel to Miami between June 25 and 29 to attend Portugal’s final group-stage match against Colombia.
According to a communication sent to parliament, Seguro will travel at the invitation of Gianni Infantino to watch the June 27 fixture.
The president of parliament, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, has already attended Portugal’s opening World Cup match against the Democratic Republic of Congo in Houston.
