Portimão Municipal Council has handed over a new wildfire response vehicle to the city’s volunteer fire brigade, boosting local firefighting capacity ahead of the summer fire season.
The new vehicle was formally delivered to the Humanitarian Association of Portimão Volunteer Firefighters (Associação Humanitária dos Bombeiros Voluntários de Portimão) during a ceremony held on June 19 in Largo 1º de Maio, outside the town hall.
Valued at approximately €280,000, the rapid-response vehicle was acquired through the Algarve 2030 programme and is equipped with the latest technology for tackling rural and forest fires.
Municipal officials say the vehicle will strengthen the resources available to firefighters at a particularly sensitive time of year, as rising temperatures and dry conditions increase wildfire risk across the region.
The delivery is the first in a series of vehicle acquisitions planned by the municipality throughout 2026 as part of an effort to significantly enhance the operational capacity of Portimão‘s fire service.
The occasion also carries special significance as the association celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.
“Strengthening our firefighters’ resources means protecting people and the territory,” said Portimão mayor Álvaro Bila. “But this delivery is also a way for the community to thank the firefighters of Portimão for the dedication and readiness they have always demonstrated. Doing so in the year the association marks a century of service is a tribute to a history that remains very much alive.”
The handover ceremony was attended by Mayor Álvaro Bila, CCDR Algarve president José Apolinário and João Mergulhão, president of the association’s board.
