Portuguese TikTok users can now purchase products directly through the app following the launch of TikTok Shop in Portugal, with just a few taps.
The feature allows users to discover, buy and pay for products without leaving the platform, marking the arrival of a social commerce model that has become increasingly popular in markets around the world.
TikTok Shop integrates e-commerce directly into the social media app, enabling purchases through videos, live streams and brand profiles. Rather than searching for products through traditional online stores, users are presented with items as they scroll through content on TikTok’s “For You” feed.
Products available through TikTok Shop are identified with a shopping bag icon. Users can tap on the item to view details, prices, reviews and delivery options before completing their purchase within the app.
The launch forms part of TikTok’s broader strategy to expand into e-commerce through what is known as social commerce, where product discovery happens organically through content creators, influencers and brands rather than through dedicated shopping websites.
The platform also includes live shopping events, allowing viewers to purchase products in real time while watching broadcasts. Brands and creators can create dedicated storefronts within their profiles, while affiliate programmes enable content creators to earn commissions on products sold through their videos.
TikTok Shop was first tested in the United Kingdom and several Southeast Asian markets in 2021 by TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance. The concept was inspired by the success of Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, which has become a major e-commerce platform in its home market.
The service expanded significantly in September 2023 with its launch in the United States, where it quickly became a key part of TikTok’s global growth strategy.
Its European rollout has been gradual. Spain and Ireland gained access to TikTok Shop in 2024, followed by France, Germany and Italy in March 2025. Portugal was not initially included in the company’s immediate expansion plans but has now joined the growing list of European markets where the service is available.
