The Nationalist Party has placed full responsibility on the Attorney General after a court revoked garnishee orders against Keith Schembri’s Kasco Holdings and his wife Josette Schembri Vella because they were not renewed within the legal timeframe.
In a statement, the PN described the development as a “serious failure in the administration of justice” and said the responsibility lies squarely with the Attorney General’s office.
The Opposition argued that the lapse raises serious questions about whether authorities tasked with safeguarding justice are applying the same standards to everyone, particularly in high-profile cases involving allegations of corruption, money laundering and financial crime.
“The Attorney General must immediately explain how such important freezing orders were allowed to expire,” the PN said.
The party called on the Attorney General to clarify whether the situation resulted from a major administrative failure or whether it happened deliberately.
According to the PN, allowing garnishee orders to lapse due to a failure to renew them on time can never be considered acceptable and undermines public confidence in the institutions responsible for ensuring justice is carried out fairly.
The Opposition also warned that the incident risks reinforcing perceptions that individuals connected to power may benefit from mistakes that would not be tolerated in other cases.
“There is no place in any country for one law for the gods and another for the animals,” the PN said, insisting that the law must apply equally to everyone.
The party pledged to continue pushing for accountability and transparency, arguing that the public deserves reassurance that Malta’s justice system operates fairly and without favouritism.
