One year after the tragic death of her six-year-old son Zaylen, Francesca Borg has shared an emotional tribute accompanied by an original song written in his memory.
Posting on social media, Borg reflected on the unimaginable loss she has carried since her son’s passing, describing the song as a way of expressing the love, grief and memories she continues to hold close.
“One year ago today, I lost my son,” she wrote.
“To express everything I feel for him, I wrote a song from my heart. Every word carries a piece of the love, the loss and the memories that I cherish of him.”
The song, dedicated entirely to Zaylen, speaks of a mother’s pain, unanswered questions and enduring love for her child.
In the lyrics, Borg recalls moments she never got to experience with her son, including his First Holy Communion, while imagining the day they will meet again.
“Even if Malta forgets your name, your father, your siblings and all your family never will,” one verse reads.
“We will continue to call you by your name and keep you alive within us forever.”
Zaylen tragically lost his life in June 2025 after he was found unconscious in a swimming pool in Naxxar. The six-year-old had wandered away while spending time with relatives before a search operation led police to discover him in a neighbouring residence’s pool.
Despite efforts by police officers and medical teams to save him, he was later pronounced dead.
A year on, the young boy continues to be remembered by his family, friends and many people across Malta who were touched by the tragedy.
Ending her tribute, Borg addressed her son directly with a message that has resonated with many parents who have experienced loss.
“I love you forever, my son… until we meet again.”
The post has since attracted an outpouring of support and condolences from people remembering Zaylen alongside his family.
