Simone Biles Says She's Recovering After Life-Threatening Experience
You won’t catch Simone Biles flipping out on the haters.
After the Olympic gymnast received criticism for going on a tropical vacation less than two weeks after sharing she almost died from an undisclosed medical emergency, she addressed the chatter.
In response to an online user who wrote, “Almost died but look at these traveling selfies....” under Biles' June 16 Instagram post, the athlete wrote that such comments made her "sad."
“A little over two weeks ago, I experienced a serious medical emergency that could have ended very differently,” she continued, "and this trip has been part of allowing myself to heal & appreciate being here."
"I hope you understand that life changing experiences can shift your perspective,” she added, “& that you're able to extend a little more grace to others moving forward have a nice day!"
Though Biles seems to be on the mend, her comment comes weeks after she suffered a near-fatal medical emergency while her husband Jonathan Owens was out of town.
“I’m not one to normally share things like this because I value privacy in today’s age,” she wrote over a photo of herself wearing three hospital bracelets on Instagram Stories June 6, “but almost dying wasn’t on my bingo card earlier this week.”
“This was one of, if not the scariest experience of my life,” she explained, “especially since Jonathan was in Indy for practices.”
Though the 29-year-old didn’t detail what the health scare entailed, she asked fans to be patient as she took time to recover.
“I’ve been in bed resting this week, I’ll explain sooner or later but s/o to my close circle who reached out, checked in, visited & or sent flowers,” she continued. “Loooovveeee y’all.”

Afterwards, Biles decided to get some much-needed R&R with her husband in Belize.
“We are going to my favorite vacation spot in the whole entire world today, which is Belize,” Biles said in the video posted to Instagram June 14. “My mom and her whole entire family were born and raised in Belize, and so me and my siblings actually have dual citizenship.”
And while she may be soaking up the sun in the Central American country, she’s still keeping the details of her health scare private.
As she replied to a user under the post who inquired about when she’ll detail the experience, “Not ready to talk about it just yet.”
