With the success of Kpop Demon Hunters, Netflix is bringing feature animation squarely under the domain of Hannah Minghella. Previously, the Sony and Bad Robot Production exec oversaw both live-action family and animation. Minghella gets the new title of Head of Netflix Animation Studio, overseeing more than 1,000 employees across three studios in Burbank, Vancouver, Canada and Sydney, Australia.
Film VP Kira Goldberg is now adding live-action family film to her portfolio. The former 20th Century Fox exec, who has been at Netflix since 2018, was an organic choice for the streamer to take on live-action family given her remit of thrillers, dramas and faith based films. In addition to the wildly popular thriller Apex, she’s also overseen beloved family dramas like Remarkably Bright Creatures and The Life List that dovetail into the family space.
Both will continue to report in to Dan Lin, Netflix Chairman of Film.
Minghella will continue to build out the streamer’s animation slate as well as connected live events and consumer products. Kpop Demon Hunters is the first Netflix movie ever to rank No. 1 at the box office with a weekend around $19M (this was back in late August last year). The Sony Productions title also spent 52 weeks on Netflix’s global top 10 list. On the horizon for Netflix Animation are such titles as Steps, Brad Bird’s Ray Gunn, The Buried Giant, The Mitchells vs. the Machines 2, and In Waves, which the streamer acquired out of Cannes. Minghella joined Netflix in 2024 from Bad Robot.
