"[When sourcing the items] We thought about where these characters would shop and what would make sense for a college student, but I also wanted to make sure some of the looks felt aspirational," Akuamoah told E!. "I thought about the people who would watch the show and how they might identify with these characters and want to dress like them."

The Inspiration Behind Allie Hayes’ Viral Off Campus Outfits

"For Allie, we wanted her wardrobe to feel fluid and expressive, reflecting her creative spirit and the sensibilities a drama student would have," Akuamoah told E!. Her style can be described as a blend of boho, contemporary fashion, vintage finds, and 1970s-inspired silhouettes.

"I drew inspiration from street style photography, runway, and tapped into looks from iconic movies like Almost Famous (Kate Hudson as Penny Lane had so much style!)," she said. "We approached her wardrobe with the idea that she could effortlessly slip into any genre or aesthetic in a way that still felt authentic to her personality."

"I think people are drawn to her style because it feels like permission to be expressive without needing to fit into a single aesthetic," Akuamoah told E!. "There’s a freedom in how she dresses that reads as effortless and not overly curated."

When getting dressed, Akuamoah said Allie follows her mood and instincts exclusively. She doesn't pay attention to trends, nor does she follow any fashion rules—like pairing a soccer jersey with a boho maxi skirt. "There’s something exciting and freeing about being able to adapt to so many styles and silhouettes, and that’s something very aspirational in a world where microtrends dominate," she said. "It takes more thought and confidence if you want to stand out."

How Can We Recreate Allie Hayes’ Outfits at Home?

To recreate Allie’s style, the goal is to build a closet that feels like a unique collection of finds that feel authentic to you."You start by making sure you don’t throw away old pieces," Akuamoah told E!. "There is a mix of boho influences, vintage, contemporary, so flowy dresses/skirts, interesting denim, vintage blouses, and a variety of boots from cowboy to biker."

Think outside the box when it comes to styling these pieces, too. The unexpected juxtaposition is the point. "The idea is to focus on curating items that feel expressive, bold, and sexy with a bit of whimsy without trying to fit into any aesthetic," she said. "Be experimental! Brands like Free People, Jaded London, PCFG, IamGia, Lioness, and scouring your local vintage boutiques for really good coats and shoes."

How the Off Campus Costume Designer Created Hannah Wells’ Cozy Style

"Hannah’s wardrobe was incredibly intentional and the result of a true collaboration between myself, the writers, and the showrunners," Akuamoah told E!. The goal was to get across to the viewer that Hannah was the girl next door, but at the same time, she's guarded and working through her trauma. The clothing reflects both of those aspects in her character. "With that in mind, we leaned more into cozy cardigans for her, soft layers, and familiar pieces that appeared throughout the season."

They created a feeling of a lived-in closet, where she repeated certain items in it and styled it in different ways—just like every girl her age would. "Because Hannah was navigating a traumatic experience, it felt important that her clothing reflected her need for safety and comfort while still being cute," she said.

How Can We Recreate Hannah’s Outfits at Home?

To recreate Hannah Wells' style, Akuamoah recommended focusing on pieces that feel cozy, comfortable, and timeless. Hannah's closet is full of colorful cardigans, soft knit sweaters, classic pairs of jeans, and casual denim mini skirts. "A big part of Hannah’s style is repetition," she told E!. "I wanted this to feel realistic to how we dress on a day-to-day, especially as someone who is working through something traumatic and will reach for her comfort pieces."

She doesn't have a massive closet like Allie; instead, she has a handful of favorite items that she returns to. "Layering is also very important in Hannah’s world," she said. "Knits paired with denim, cardigans with a cute low-cut shirt, and really good quality comfortable basics. Reach for brands like Aritzia, Uniqlo, Reformation, United Colours of Benetton, Levi’s, and Mother."
